PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
On January 30th, 2014, geologist Hugo Lino was prospecting for gold near the abandoned mining community of La Ciénega in Sonora, Mexico when he found a 6.1 kg meteorite instead. A piece of that very meteorite is embedded in this coin!
First issued in 2014, the incredible Meteorite Impact series is now in its 17th year with this brand new release, the 2021 1oz Silver La Ciénega Meteorite coin. Each coin in the series commemorates and brings to life famous meteorite impacts throughout the world, featuring their own unique designs as well as a tiny piece of the actual meteorite it's named after!
Struck by Germany's Mayer Mint and released on behalf of the Cook Islands as legal tender, this coin has a face value of . Each coin was struck with an impressive antique finish from one troy ounce of highly pure .999 fine silver. Further enhancing the coin's appeal, CIT has produced a series first by embedding the meteorite into the edge of the coin!
The reverse side of the coin displays a desert landscape inspired by the community of La Cienega, with various cacti in the foreground and canyons along the horizon. Curving along the upper edge of the coin is the inscription, "La Cienega," and the meteorite can be seen coming down from the sky in its final moments before impact. The year, "2021," is inscribed along the bottom of the coin's face. The obverse features the portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, encircled by inscription of her name, the country of issue, and the denomination.
Each coin will arrive housed in an acrylic holder in its original mint packaging accommodated by the Certificate of Authenticity. In addition, this 2021 Cook Islands 1oz Silver La Cienega Meteorite has been limited to a worldwide low mintage of just 2500 pieces!
