The Year of the Ox
Centuries ago, the Chinese invented a calendar based on the lunar (rather than the solar) cycle. There are twelve animals in the Chinese lunar zodiac, each corresponding in sequence to a year rather than a month.
In 2009 we celebrate the Year of the Ox. According to tradition, people born during a Year of the Ox are said to exhibit that animal’s attributes. While everyone knows the saying "strong as an ox", the personality traits go much deeper than that. Ox personalities are tenacious, dependable, confident, patient, enduring, quiet, and systematic, with a kind, caring nature that enjoys helping others. They can be averse to risk, wary of new things, and stubborn at times.
This is the second annual release in the
Lunar Zodiac Series II from Australia
that began in 2008.
Technology Note
The Perth Mint of Australia employs its own proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The vibrant hues and precise execution of the technology create a stunning, full-color portrait on each coin.
Obverse
A mother cow (a female ox) and her calf present a scene of supreme tranquility, standing in a field of grass with hills in the background. The legend YEAR OF THE OX defines the theme. The Chinese character for "Ox" is at the top, while the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark is judiciously placed to the left, near the 8:30 position along the rim.
Reverse
The reverse features Her Majesty,
Queen Elizabeth II
, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity. The legends ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the denomination also appear.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated inside an elegant, red and black clamshell-style presentation case lined with black velvet & satin and protected by a full color outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
