Volcanoes are among the most dramatic, deadly, and feared forces of nature. This large, 2 troy ounce pure silver proof is a true numismatic work of art that tests the limits of modern minting technology. On a planchet that spans 55 mm (more than 2 inches), the ultra-high relief strike of the volcano provides a dramatic centerpiece for the flowing lava, while poisonous gases and ash shoot into the atmosphere. The layered tableau truly captures the violence of an eruption with vibrant orange and red hues, masterfully recreated using a special digital color technology. The high gloss lacquer finish on the molten magma achieves a realistic hot, wet, and liquid look. The mintage limit of just 750 ensures that this first issue in the Forces of Nature series will be sought after long after sell out.
Did you know that a volcanic eruption can kill you in a number of different ways? Pressurized magma from underground burst forth in flows of red hot, molten lava. Volcanoes near the ocean can trigger tsunami waves hundreds of feet high, capable of sweeping inland for miles. Particles of dust and ash blot out the sun, lowering temperatures for years and creating a "year without a summer," and even little ice ages. Dust and ash can also clog jet turbine engines, causing them to fail in flight! Mudflows called lahars are able to sweep away trees, huge boulders and entire villages.
The biggest killer of all are the pyroclastic flows, fast-moving currents of hot gas and volcanic matter that travel along the ground, away from the volcano, at high rates of speed. Too fast to escape, on average they cover 60 miles per hour (100 kmh), but can reach speeds over 400 mph (700 kmh). With temperatures up to 1,800° F (1,000° C), they incinerate and suffocate any living thing in their path. It was pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius, and not lava, that did in the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD.

An Explosion of Technologies
A mighty volcano erupts in all its glory, an effect achieved on this remarkable coin through the application of multiple advanced technologies:
- Ash and cloud in full color darken the sky.
- The erupting lava is vibrantly portrayed in red-hot, brilliant colors, while
- Glossy, high tech lacquer enhances the liquid look of the lava.
- Ultra high relief minting results in a deadly, three dimensional volcano,
- Further enhanced by the full proof finish.
Deadly Eruptions
Some of the world's best known volcanic eruptions have also been among the most dramatic and deadly:
Mount St. Helens
, Washington State, United States, 1980
A two-month long series of earthquakes and steam-venting episodes culminated on Sunday, May 18, 1980. A massive, explosive eruption created a column of smoke 80,000 feet (15 miles) high, melting several glaciers on the mountain! The thermal energy released was equivalent to 26 megatons of TNT. Nearly 60 people were killed in what is generally considered to be the most disastrous eruption in US history.
Krakatoa
, Indonesian Island, 1883
Quite simply, the eruption of Krakatoa remains one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in the annals of history. The eruptions started on May 20, 1883, capped by four enormous explosions on August 27th. The third and largest explosion is estimated to have been equal to over 200 megatons of TNT—four times more powerful than the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated! It caused tsunamis and was heard in Perth, Australia, about 2,000 miles away. It is believed to have generated the loudest sound in the history of the world. Over 70% of the island of Krakatoa and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed, collapsing into the massive caldera. Estimates of fatalities range from 40,000 to over 120,000.
Mount Pinatubo
, The Philippines, 1991
The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo on the island of Luzon in the Philippines lasted for five months and was the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. Approximately 850 people were killed and more than 10,000 were left homeless. The eruption had been preceded by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake less than a year before.
